On Skill Checks

I would like to give the players power over their characters’ skills. My plan is to avoid calling for skill checks if at all possible. This means you are free to use whatever skills you think are appropriate at any time. Simply tell me what your character is attempting, choose a skill, and make a check. My idea is to give skills more scope and importance than what is mechanically included in the rules. For example, the rules for Athletics provide for climbing, jumping, escaping from a grab, and swimming. But this skill should also include things like tipping over a heavy table to give cover from archers, knocking over an old statue on top of a group of enemies, or wrestling with the village bully.

My goal is to prevent my assumptions from governing when and how skills can be used and, hopefully, engendering more creative, collaborative gaming.
